Instead of a direct flash onto the subject which would cause a hash and flat look on the subject. Here we have a flash that fills up the general area both table and wall. An off camera flash bouncing off the wall filling up the whole area.
A flash from top directing at the table behind the subject, casuing a backlight affect. Bright table but the wall is still in the dark.
An off camera flash with only a pin hole allowing a narrow directional light to hit the subject. Flash placement is above and slightly off centre causing a short shadow from the bottle.
